1. Introduction to Arabic Alphabet

The Arabic alphabet, or Arabic abjad, is the Arabic script as it is codified for writing Arabic. It is written from right to left in a cursive style and includes 28 letters. Most letters have contextual letterforms.

2. Arabic Letters – Huroof

ʿIlm al-Ḥurūf is composed of the two words ʿilm (Arabic: عِلْم) meaning “knowledge”, and ḥurūf (Arabic: حُرُوف), the plural of the word ḥarf (Arabic: حَرْف), meaning “letters”.

3. Arabic Vowels – Harakat

The Arabic script has numerous diacritics, which include: consonant pointing known as iʻjām, and supplementary diacritics known as tashkīl. The latter include the vowel marks termed ḥarakāt.

4. Long Vowels – Madd

“Madd” means to stretch a sound and there are three madd letters which are ا, و and ي.

5. Resting Sound – Sukoon

The Arabic word Sukoon سُكُون means still, rest. It is represented by a small circle ـْ above the letter. The sukoon symbol represents an absence of the vowel on a letter. It means the letter is in a still position (no Harakat حَرَکَات above or below the letter).

6. Emphasis – Shaddah

The Shadda symbol resembles the English letter W in shape, i.e. ـّ. Shadda squeezes adjacent double letters into single. For example, the word Shadda itself has double d, Shadda.

7. Rules of Noon

A noon saakin ( ) and tanween are considered the same because the sound of a tanween sounds just like a noon saakin. Because of this similarity, the two take the same rules.

8. Characteristics of The Quranic Writing

How Quran letters and words are written and its history.
